Education has Long been a Human Right

With AI, we have taken a huge step towards education moving from a universal human right to a universal human reality.

Let me explain.

Education has long been a human right.

Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states this clearly:

“Everyone has the right to education.”

Think of how many students are sitting in classrooms, unable to access the learning because the content and the resources are not at the right level.

As a classroom teacher, I can tell you that this is not uncommon. Sure, students are in class, surrounded by peers who are breezing through education, while they are standing on the outside looking in. They are locked out of their own education.

I’m sure you know students like this.

Her reading comprehension is low, so she can’t access your textbook.

His processing speed is low, so he can’t understand your instructions.

There is a multitude of students for whom their education is all form and no substance; they have the uniforms, classrooms, and carnivals, but no learning.

Let me tell you this: AI is good news for these students.

Artificial intelligence represents our greatest leap forward in helping disadvantaged and disaffected students.

The way I see it, AI helps teachers do the high-value, needle-moving tasks that they know work, but previously haven’t had the time to do. Things like:

  • Simplifying readings

  • Crafting low-stakes tests

  • Creating retrieval questions

  • Speed up the feedback loop

  • Giving tasks-specific rubrics

  • Increase student self-efficacy

  • Creating adjusted assessments

  • Translating text into other languages

  • Increase their own content knowledge

With the proper training and appropriate boundaries, AI will do wonderful things for education.
